Un poderoso ciclón bomba azota el noreste de Estados Unidos (Fotos)

Un poderoso “ciclón bomba” invernal golpea la costa este de Estados Unidos, con enormes nevascas y un intenso frío: hay miles de vuelos anulados, las escuelas cerraron y hasta el Senado suspendió sus votaciones por el resto de la semana.

La gélida borrasca de nieve y hielo se abatió sobre parte de Florida, Georgia y Carolina del Sur y amenaza ahora con convertirse en una tempestad invernal histórica al avanzar hacia el noreste.

Partes de los estados de Maine, Nueva York y Boston, en la costa este, han tenido o pueden esperar fuertes ráfagas de viento de 80 a 128 km/h y hasta 7,6 cm de nieve por hora.

La tormenta amenaza con dejar a millones sin luz y recién amainará el viernes, al avanzar hacia Canadá.

Florida, el “estado del sol”, vio la nieve por primera vez en tres décadas el miércoles en el norte del estado.

Su gobernador, Rick Scott, urgió a las personas a prepararse “para un frío extremo, incluido eventualmente nieve, aguanieve o acumulaciones de hielo”.

– Bombogénesis –

La borrasca es considerada un “huracán bomba” en un proceso conocido como bombogénesis. Al ganar fuerza a una velocidad increíble desde el miércoles, su presión cayó drásticamente, superando incluso el criterio de 24 milibares en 24 horas y bajando esa cantidad en apenas siete.

“¡Esta tormenta es intensa!”, aseguró el servicio nacional del clima de Boston en su cuenta Twitter. “Esperen lo inesperado”.

Boston espera recibir hasta 35 cm de nieve y ráfagas de viento de 105 km/h.

Casi 75% de los vuelos del aeropuerto internacional de Boston y de Newark, en Nueva Jersey, fueron anulados. En Nueva York, fueron cancelados 71% de los vuelos en el aeropuerto de LaGuardia y 36% en el John F. Kennedy, según el sitio Flightaware.

Unas 12 personas murieron esta semana en Estados Unidos debido al frío.

– “Muy peligrosa” –

Las autoridades declararon el estado de emergencia en la ciudad de Nueva York y regiones aledañas. Todas las escuelas han cerrado.

La nieve cae sin cesar en medio de fuertes vientos sobre la Gran Manzana, donde pocos vehículos y transeúntes se aventuran en las calles, avanzando muy lentamente para evitar deslizamientos y resbalones en medio de una temperatura de -4ºC, que bajará aún más tras la tormenta.

Los buses y el metro funcionan, pero hay retrasos. El servicio de ferry será suspendido al mediodía, anunció el alcalde Bill de Blasio.

“Estamos ante una severa y muy peligrosa tormenta de nieve”, dijo de Blasio en una conferencia de prensa. “Quédense en sus casas, usen el transporte público si tienen que salir y cuiden a sus vecinos si precisan ayuda”.

Se espera que la ciudad recibirá en total hasta 25 cm de nieve y ráfagas de viento de hasta 80 km/h, según el servicio nacional meteorológico.

Unos 4.800 funcionarios municipales trabajan desde el miércoles de noche en turnos de 12 horas depositando toneladas de sal en calles y aceras y barriendo la nieve con camiones.

El gobernador del estado de Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, declaró el estado de emergencia.

En Washington, el líder del Senado, Mitch McConnell, anunció que no habrá votaciones esta semana, acortando aún más una breve semana que había comenzado el miércoles a raíz del feriado de año nuevo.
